He comes to us through a program called Experience Works, helping connect unemployed seniors with work experiences to help them enter the work force. Fred worked in food service for 30 years. The long hours on his feet on hard surfaces damaged his feet and knees. Three years ago his doctor told him he had to cut back on his working hours.

“Some days I wake up and can barely walk,” he said.

Fred began volunteering with food pantries three years ago, the same pantries he patroned himself in order to make ends meet. He still volunteers for Philabundance and Heart of Gloucester County. He started with Catholic Charities two months ago and has been a godsend to our food pantry there.

Last week, thanks to his connections with Heart of Gloucester County, he helped arrange a donation of 100 coats to our center, which we can now provide to our food pantry and veterans services clients during the winter.

“I have loved doing this more than any paying job I have ever had. Even though I need too, I know there are people who need more than I do. I’m passionate about this work.”

Food
Fred’s connections in the community have helped our food pantry bring in several donations. Recently he organized a donation from a local fire department that wanted to donate Thanksgiving food items. “I started crying when I realized how much food was coming in,” he said, as fire fighters carried in 40 bags of food.
