In Salem County, we operate some of our most innovative hunger and nutrition programming, thanks to a grant from the Salem Health and Wellness Foundation. As one of New Jersey’s poorest counties, the need for such services in this area is great.
In Salem County, one in seven people is food insecure. Food insecurity, or a lack of access to adequate, nutritious food, means that people must make impossible choices between paying for housing, bills or medicine, and food.
In addition, those who experience food insecurity tend to turn to more unhealthy foods in order to stretch a limited budget, and as a result, health issues abound among the poor and food insecure.
